Emperor Guangwu’s Reign
Emperor Guangwu is known as the founder of the Eastern Han Dynasty, ruled wisely from 25 to 57 AD. He restored peace and prosperity to China after a turbulent period of Civil War. Founding what historians now call the Later Han Dynasty, Guang Wu initially ruled over parts of China but had consolidated the entire country by the time of his death in 1857. This achievement places him in the league of other monarchs of his era who ruled vast empires, such as Augustus Caesar. Guang Wu was a significant ruler, not a minor king. Devout in Taoism, which emphasizes the balance of Yin and Yang, his worldview shifted dramatically in the seventh year of his reign, around 31 AD.
The Solar Eclipse and the Crucifixion
In 31 AD, historical records document a solar eclipse on the last day of a month, traditionally seen as an ominous event. Alarmed, the Emperor Guangwu ceased all military activities and even official duties for five days, issuing a proclamation that, “Yin and yang have mistakenly switched, and the sun and moon were eclipsed. The sins of all the people are now on one Man; pardon is proclaimed to all under Heaven.” (History of Latter Han Dynasty, Volume 1, Chronicles of Emperor Guang Wu, 7th Year) This proclamation by the Emperor, allude to none other than Jesus Christ, whose crucifixion coincided with the eclipse. In a day and age, where the fastest mode of transport on land is on horse, in a place that is 7000km away from Jerusalem, it would be impossible for the message to be delivered from Jerusalem to China, considering how fast things escalated from simply a judgement against Jesus, to His Crucifixion. Humanly, message spreads, but, not that fast! On the Hebrew calendar, Nissan 14 marks the start of Passover, the day when lambs are slaughtered, when Jesus the Ultimate Sacrificial Lamb was slain for the salvation of those who would come under His Protection. God sent the message directly from His own Throneroom to China, God divinely chose to supernaturally downloaded such an amazing revelation of salvation through Jesus, to a monarch of China. According to the Bible, following Jesus’ crucifixion at nine in the morning (Mark 15:25-33), Matthew 27:45 states that “darkness came over the whole land from noon until three in the afternoon.” The significance: Darkness is often associated with judgment in the Old Testament (see Amos 5:18; 8:9). Jesus sacrificed Himself, took our place, shedding His blood to atone for humanity’s sins, offering us the gift of eternal life.
Should it be surprising that God can download such messages even through the stars, and also give direct communications? When Jesus was just born, angels gave this good news to lowly shepherds, and also the wise men from the East (that were notified much earlier prior to the birth, and followed the stars to visit the newborn King, bearing special gifts for Him) (Matthew 2:1-12). (Note: Some might be interested to know why many say that Jesus died in AD31, and not AD33. This is because BC and AD are used in the Julian and Gregorian calendars (but, they were not part of the Bible). However, many of those who studied the Scriptures to carefully look at the clues that the Bible writers gave, have concluded that Jesus died in AD31. View the articles and videos here:

Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, demonstrating His victory over death and sin, confirming His divinity as the Son of God.
Chinese historical records witness that the Chinese Emperor Guangwu of Later Han Dynasty and his astronomers were given prophetic revelation about the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This fascinating claim is evidenced from ancient Chinese chronicles, which describe celestial events and the proclamations of the Emperor, coinciding with the biblical timeline of Jesus’s death and resurrection.
The Resurrection and the Rainbow Halo
The Chinese records also describe a celestial event, the appearance of a rainbow, three days after the eclipse: “During the reign of Emperor Guangwu, on the day of Bing Yin of the fourth month, a halo, a rainbow, encircled the sun.” (History of the Latter Han Annals, No. 18, Gui Hai). This remarkable phenomenon aligns with the resurrection of Jesus, which occurred three days after His death.
Celestial Signs and Their Interpretation
The rainbow around the sun could be seen as a divine sign confirming Jesus’s resurrection. In the Bible, rainbows often symbolize God’s promises, such as after the flood with Noah. Similarly, the vision of heaven in Revelation describes God’s throne surrounded by a rainbow. Rainbows are commonly used as symbols of God’s covenant and promises. He even placed one in the sky. After the flood, Noah promised not to destroy the Earth with water again. In Revelation, John saw God’s Throne surrounded by a rainbow.

God’s Revelation to the Chinese
These events reveals that God was manifesting Himself to the Chinese people, demonstrating His love and offering them a chance for redemption through Jesus Christ. The Emperor’s accurate interpretation of these signs implies divine guidance. The Holy Spirit communicated the significance of these events to him, despite the lack of Christian missionaries in China at the time.
Conclusion
The alignment of these celestial events with biblical accounts indicates that God has been reaching out to the Chinese people, revealing His power and grace. These historical records provide a fascinating glimpse into how different cultures experienced and interpreted divine events. This narrative encourages us to consider the universality of God’s message and His desire for all people to know Him and receive His Gift of salvation.
