Logos and Rhema: Two Dimensions of God’s Word in the Bible and Beyond

In the New Testament, two Greek words are commonly translated as “word” — Logos and Rhema. While both terms refer to the communication of God’s message, they each carry distinct nuances, providing deeper insight into how God speaks and how we interact with His Word.

Logos: The Written, Eternal Word of God

Logos (λόγος) primarily refers to the eternal, unchanging, and written Word of God. It is the embodiment of divine reason and truth. In John 1:1, logos is famously used to describe Jesus Himself:
“In the beginning was the Word (logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
This passage reveals that logos is more than just written or spoken text; it is the very expression of God’s nature, manifest in Jesus Christ. Logos is often used to refer to the Bible, the Scripture that stands as the foundational truth for believers. It represents the overarching message, principles, and purposes of God throughout history.

As believers, we are called to immerse ourselves in the logos, allowing it to renew our minds and guide our lives (Romans 12:2). The logos provides the stable, unshakable foundation on which our faith is built. It is the divine wisdom that transcends time, offering eternal truth and revelation.

Rhema: The Living, Personal Word of God

In contrast, Rhema (ῥῆμα) refers to a specific, spoken word or message that is personally delivered and applied to a particular situation or moment. Where logos is universal and constant, rhema is dynamic and often personal, emphasizing the immediate and intimate communication of God’s will or guidance to an individual. For instance, in Matthew 4:4, Jesus says:
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word (rhema) that comes from the mouth of God.”

This reveals that believers live by the direct, spoken instructions of God—those moments where the Holy Spirit breathes life into the written Word and makes it specifically applicable. The rhema word is often what we experience when we feel that God is speaking to us through Scripture in a fresh, deeply relevant way or through prophetic insight. It’s when a verse, long familiar to us, suddenly leaps off the page and provides exactly the encouragement or correction we need.

How Logos and Rhema Work Together

Both logos and rhema are essential for a balanced and vibrant Christian life. The logos anchors us in truth, keeping us grounded in God’s eternal purposes, while the rhema brings that truth to life in our day-to-day experiences. Think of the logos as the reservoir of divine wisdom, and rhema as a timely draw from that reservoir, specifically suited to the need of the moment.

For instance, when facing a difficult decision, you might seek direction in Scripture (logos) and, during prayer, feel the Holy Spirit highlight a particular verse or passage that speaks directly to your situation (rhema). This blend of both the general and the specific is part of how God leads and speaks to His children.

Paul encapsulates the importance of both in Ephesians 6:17, where he describes the “sword of the Spirit, which is the word (rhema) of God.” This verse shows that the rhema word is a weapon in spiritual warfare, giving believers power and authority when spoken and acted upon.

Applying Logos and Rhema in Your Life

To apply this understanding, it’s essential to engage with both dimensions of God’s Word. Begin by meditating on the logos—read and study Scripture to familiarize yourself with God’s heart, His promises, and His commands. As you do so, you create fertile ground for the rhema word to take root. When you face a trial or seek direction, listen for the Holy Spirit’s voice, trusting Him to quicken a specific passage or bring fresh revelation.

Both logos and rhema demonstrate that God is a communicator who delights in revealing Himself to His children. As you dwell in His written Word and stay open to His personal voice, you can expect to live a life led by the Spirit and grounded in the truth.
