After the first revival of the 1920s, the peaceful years that followed led to spiritual growth in the region. However, in 1973, a major turning point occurred during a teacher’s seminar in Indonesia. Evangelists visiting Ba Kelalan brought teachings about the Holy Spirit, sparking deep spiritual hunger among local leaders like Pak Tagal Paran, Pa Agong Bangau and Maria Gukang. Through Pa Agong, God revealed His intention to establish Mount Murud as a site for His church. God began to reveal His plans for the region through prophetic visions and messages, including instructions to establish Mount Murud as a prayer site. Each vision and prophecy was carefully examined against Scripture to ensure that they are from God.
Angelic Sightings and Miraculous Events:
1.First Prayer Meeting at Mount Murud (July 15-20, 1985): For the four-day journey up Mount Murud, God gave precise instructions about the order of groups ascending the mountain. A total of 674 people, including 100 persons from Bario, attended the first prayer meeting at Mount Murud. Those who disobeyed experienced sickness and pain. Despite heavy rain and physical challenges, the group praised God, and His Spirit sustained them. At the summit, a miraculous event occurred when a star descended upon the worshippers, symbolizing that God was empowering them in prayer.
- A snake appeared among the group, but a man crushed it underfoot, declaring victory in Jesus’ name, signifying spiritual authority over darkness.
- On the second night, God showed a miraculous sign of fire, a reproduction of the divine fire during Elijah’s challenge of the Baal prophets. After attempts to light a wet mixture of stone, soil, and moss failed, Pa Agong lit the mixture himself, and it burst into a large flame without burning the surrounding plants. God revealed that this miracle symbolized the coming judgment by fire at the end of time.
2. Rock Garden Prayer Meeting (September 1985): During a prayer meeting at the Rock Garden, the rocks moved, and trees changed colors as the people worshipped. God said, “This is the place I give to you to come and worship me. As you worship and pray, everything will move and praise the Lord. Even the colour of the trees and grass will change. It means that everyone who comes to this mountain to worship me wholeheartedly will be changed. They will love one another and love me more.”
3. Divine Protection and Provision in Church Building (1989-1992): God had a grand plan to build a church on Mount Murud, a task both monumental and fraught with risks. The situation was fraught with danger as there were communist groups hiding in the Borneo jungles, and possessing building materials could have led to accusations of aiding them. Despite this peril, Pak Derias bravely accompanied Pa Agong in search of a suitable site for the church camp. Miraculously, they found a location that precisely matched the vision God had given—complete with the same arrangement of trees, a small pool, and a river. This alignment with the divine vision not only reassured the church leaders but also unified them in moving forward with the church building plans. This alignment and the protection from danger underscore the miraculous nature of the guidance and provision they experienced.
In 1989, a fundraising meeting at Liang Ukung raised RM27,6000 for the church project. Despite limitations like a lack of fuel, the work began, with seven people camping on the mountain to clear land and cut timber. The building, a 20 x 40 ft two-storey church, was completed in just two weeks.
By 1990, the church’s launch revealed it was too small for the 500 attendees. God revealed plans for a larger church, three times the size of the original. With additional funds and support, a new church was built in four months, completed in 1992. Unfortunately, Pa Agong Bangau passed away six months before the new building’s official launch.
On the launch day, a thick cloud prevented a Sarawak State Cabinet guest of honor from landing to officiate, signaling that God would not share His glory. The launch was eventually conducted by Rev. Gerawet Maran, the president of SIB Sarawak.
3. Healing Miracle in International Revival Meeting: Every May, Lun Bawangs would climb up the mountain to pray on Mount Murud. The International Prayer Meeting (IPM) at Mount Murud is a significant event where God deeply ministers to the souls of participants. Despite the physically demanding climb to the mountain, which typically limits attendance to the fit, the IPM is also held in Ba’kelalan every other year to include those who are elderly or infirm.
In one instance, a woman who climbed Mount Murud in tears, despite being in severe pain, was miraculously healed by God after her persistent faith was honored during the revival meeting. This healing, along with other testimonies, highlights the miraculous nature of God’s presence and blessings at the IPM.
Mount Murud has since become an international prayer site, where believers witness miraculous healings, angelic visitations, and encounter God’s presence deeply.
