Prophetic art is a visual form of prophecy that carries a message from God’s heart to strengthen, encourage, or comfort. It is God-breathed and carries within it an element of His life-giving faith. It often begins as worship art, and God places His prophetic message within what we create motivated by our love for Him. There is no limit to the creativity in communications of the Holy Spirit, as the visions and images in the books of Zechariah and Jeremiah will testify.
Prophetic art may also incorporate various Christian artistic forms and is not limited to a specific style or medium, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography etc. All manner of artistic works may reveal the nature of God, and when an artist creates momentum for the Spirit to flow through them, the work of their hands becomes anointed to do God’s work.
Christian icons and symbolic images, such as keys, doves, and crosses, are often comforting to congregations, as they carry familiar religious meanings. However, they are not automatically prophetic and are sometimes misunderstood outside the Christian community. Despite their historical and cultural significance, these images primarily serve to strengthen and give peace to believers.
Ultimately, the prophetic nature of an artwork cannot be judged solely by its content, even a stickman can also deliver a message, if it is anointed by God. An illustrated Biblical parable can also be prophetic. A symbolic image, color, or number can also be prophetic. The key factor in determining whether art is prophetic lies in the interaction between God, the art, and the viewer, making the prophetic element a deeply personal and subjective experience. As a person allows God to speak to them, the Holy Spirit can determine which image will profoundly resonate with an individual, revealing God’s message to them.
Prophetic art focuses on foretelling (‘now’) or the forthtelling (‘future’), releasing love, joy, hope, and power. It gives direction, confirmation, and encourages our journey. Prophetic artists stand on the threshold between two realms allowing the spiritual realm to manifest on the canvas. They have permission to release authority, compassion, and revelation.
When an artist creates a work with God, there is a supernatural element within the work that empowers others to experience an encounter. The impact of prophetic art can happen in an instant, and it is Spirit-to-spirit communication that often does its life-transforming work before the viewer has connected with the art in their conscious mind.
Biblical Examples of Prophetic Art
1. Bezalel and the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:1-5):
- God chose Bezalel, filled him with the Spirit of God, and gave him wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and all kinds of skills to create artistic designs in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of artistic crafts. Bezalel’s work in constructing the Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant, and other sacred objects was a form of prophetic art, as it visually represented God’s covenant and presence among His people.
2. Ezekiel’s Visual Prophecies (Ezekiel 4:1-3):
- The prophet Ezekiel was commanded by God to create a model of Jerusalem on a clay tablet and to act out a siege against it. This was a visual and symbolic act, a prophetic message conveyed through artistic representation. Ezekiel’s actions, directed by God, served as a visual prophecy to communicate the coming judgment on Jerusalem.
3. The Vision of the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:10-27):
- The Apostle John received a vision of the New Jerusalem, which he described in vivid detail. This description, while not physically created as art, has inspired countless artists throughout history to visualize and depict this prophetic vision. The imagery of the city with streets of gold, gates of pearl, and foundations adorned with precious stones serves as a powerful prophetic image of God’s future kingdom.
4. The Priestly Garments (Exodus 28):
- The design of the priestly garments, particularly those of the High Priest, was given by God and was rich in symbolism. The ephod, breastplate, and other elements of the attire were not just functional but carried deep prophetic significance, symbolizing the roles and responsibilities of the priest, the tribes of Israel, and their relationship with God.
The Role of Prophetic Art Today
Prophetic art continues to be a vibrant expression in the modern Christian community. Artists seek to capture and convey spiritual truths, often creating works during worship services, prayer meetings, or personal devotion times.
These artworks can serve multiple purposes:
Encouragement: Offering visual encouragement and inspiration to those who see them.
Revelation: Providing insight or a new perspective on a spiritual truth.
Intercession: Acting as a form of prayer or intercession, where the artist creates as a means of engaging with God on behalf of others.
